課程概述

My goal is to provide the students with an introduction of basic concepts in physics covering topics of classical mechanics, statistical physics, electromagnetism, modern physics, and quantum mechanics. Whenever appropriate, I will seek to discuss examples, especially those related to biology and medicine, of how physical concepts can be applied.  

課程目標
Described below are the approximate content of this course. Course content and pace will be adjusted according to the students' need. Therefore, no exact timeline will be followed

1. Classical mechanics
Review of Newtonian mechanics: F=ma, spring, momentum, angular momentum, energy, conservation, diffusion, Brownian motion, membrane transport, and ultrasound. Principle of least action. Noether's theorem.

2. Special and General Theory of Relativity
Length contraction, time-dilation, E=mc2 , anti-matter and positron emission tomography (PET). Equivalence principle. Space-time curvature. Dirac equation. Einstein field equation.

3. Electricity and Magnetism
Classical electricity and mechanism. Defibrillator. Photodynamic therapy. Laser applications in biology and medicine.

4. Optics and Microscopy
Reflection, refraction, scattering, diffraction, Huygens-Fresnel Principle, total internal reflection, fiber optics, structure of the eye. Bright field microscopy: applications to histology (hematoxylin and eosin/H&E imaging). Fluorescence microsopy: labelling of cellular organelles, antibody labeling, green fluorescent proteins. High throughput tissue cytometry and precision medicine.

5. Quantum mechanics
Wave-particle duality, Schrödinger equation, atomic structure. Molecular spectroscopy (absorption, emission, Raman) and applications. Spin, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Quantum field theory. Feynmann diagram. Quantum statistics: boson/fermions. 
課程要求
The course will be conducted entirely in English, including quiz and exam questions. Furthermore, all questions and answers, during or after class, will also be conducted in English.
